David Troutt, Director of the Nisqually Indian Tribe’s Department of Natural Resources, and the chair of the Nisqually River Council recently wrote this Op-Ed for the Seattle Times.
He and his co-authors argue that the survival of orca whales is dependent on the survival of salmon, their main food source. Salmon, in turn, require a healthy Puget Sound environment to thrive. Salmon survival rates in the Salish Sea have declined rapidly in the last decades, however. In short, to save the iconic species of the Pacific Northwest, it is important to improve the Salish Sea environment.
